Religious Education and the National Curriculum

Religious Education (RE) is a compulsory subject for all pupils in England, although it is not part of the National Curriculum. Instead, RE is taught in accordance with statutory requirements, which require all maintained schools to provide Religious Education for every pupil. In Church of England schools, RE forms an essential part of a broad and balanced curriculum and makes a significant contribution to pupils' personal development, spiritual growth and understanding of the diverse world in which they live.

At Medstead CE Primary School, our RE curriculum is based on Living Difference IV, the Hampshire Agreed Syllabus, and is enriched through the Understanding Christianity resource. Through these approaches, pupils develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity as a living faith, alongside learning about a range of religious and non-religious worldviews. They are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, reflect on their own beliefs and values, and engage respectfully with the beliefs of others.

As a Church of England school, we are committed to ensuring that RE is academically rigorous, inclusive and relevant. Our curriculum supports pupils in becoming religiously literate, enabling them to understand the role religion and belief play in people's lives, communities and wider society, while preparing them to flourish in an increasingly diverse modern Britain. 

Parents have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education. Further information is available from the school office on request.
