Enrichment
Enrichment at Medstead CE Primary School
At Medstead, we believe that some of the most valuable learning experiences happen beyond the classroom. Our enrichment programme provides opportunities for children to discover new interests, develop confidence, build friendships and challenge themselves in new and exciting ways.
From sports and the arts to outdoor adventures, leadership opportunities and community projects, we strive to ensure that every child enjoys a rich and varied school experience that helps them grow academically, socially and personally.

Leadership and Responsibility
At Medstead, we believe that pupil voice plays an important role in shaping our school community. Children are encouraged to take on positions of responsibility, contribute their ideas and use their talents to make a positive difference to the lives of others. Many roles are applied for by pupils and some are allocated through a peer-voting process, helping children develop confidence, leadership and citizenship skills. Our wide range of leadership opportunities includes:
- Young Governors, who meet with school leaders, share ideas from their peers and help organise fundraising initiatives.
- Worship Leaders, who support collective worship, lead prayers and readings, and represent the school through links with other church schools.
- House Captains and Sports Captains, who promote teamwork, organise events and help to build house spirit across the school.
- Digital Leaders, who support the use of technology and promote online safety.
- Art Ambassadors, who help coordinate Arts Week and celebrate creativity across the school.
- Young Environmentalists, who lead environmental initiatives and encourage sustainable practices within our school community.
- Learning Mentors, Reading Buddies, Oak Buddies, Playground Pals and Peer Mentors, who support younger children and help ensure everyone feels included and valued.
- Librarians, Young Journalists, Junior Road Safety Officers, British Sign Language Buddies, Office Angels and Young Entrepreneurs, who each contribute to different aspects of school life and help strengthen our community.
Through these opportunities, children develop leadership, communication, teamwork and organisational skills while learning the importance of service, responsibility and active participation within school and the wider community. By empowering pupils to lead and contribute, we help them grow into confident, compassionate and responsible citizens.
Community, Faith and Wider Experiences
As a Church of England school, our Christian vision and values are at the heart of our school community. We enjoy strong links with our local church and work closely together to provide opportunities for children to explore faith, reflect on values and contribute positively to the wider community.
Children regularly take part in:
- Church services and celebrations throughout the year
- Visits to the local church to support Religious Education learning
- Community events and projects
- Charity fundraising and support for local causes
- Visits from clergy and other community members
- Opportunities to reflect on spirituality, compassion and service
These experiences help children develop an understanding of their place within the local and global community, while encouraging respect, empathy and a sense of responsibility towards others.
By working in partnership with our church and wider community, we help children develop a strong sense of belonging and an appreciation of the positive difference they can make in the lives of others.

Educational Visits and Workshops
At Medstead, we believe that learning is at its most powerful when children can experience it first-hand. Educational visits and visiting workshops play an important role in bringing the curriculum to life, helping children make meaningful connections and create lasting memories.
Every year group takes part in at least one curriculum-linked educational visit and one visiting workshop each term. These carefully planned experiences enrich classroom learning, deepen understanding and inspire curiosity across a wide range of subjects.
Our children benefit from opportunities such as:
- Visits to historical sites, museums and places of worship
- Science and environmental workshops
- Outdoor learning experiences
- Theatre productions and arts workshops
- Author, artist and specialist visitor sessions
- Geography fieldwork and local area studies
- Hands-on STEM activities
- Cultural and heritage experiences
These opportunities allow children to engage with their learning in exciting and practical ways, developing their knowledge, confidence and enthusiasm for the subjects they study. By providing a rich variety of experiences both in and beyond the classroom, we aim to broaden horizons, raise aspirations and ensure that every child has access to memorable learning opportunities throughout their time at Medstead.

Residential visits
At Medstead, we believe that residential visits are a vital part of a child's primary school experience. They provide unique opportunities for children to develop confidence, independence and resilience while creating unforgettable memories with their friends. Away from their usual routines, children are encouraged to challenge themselves, work collaboratively and discover strengths they may not have realised they possessed.
We offer a carefully planned programme of residential visits throughout Key Stage 2, with each experience building upon the last in both duration and challenge. As children progress through the school, they are given increasing opportunities to develop teamwork, responsibility and self-confidence in a supportive and exciting environment.
Through these enriching experiences, our children gain valuable life skills, form lasting friendships and develop the courage and determination to embrace new challenges. Residential visits are often among the most treasured memories of their time at Medstead, helping them grow not only as learners but also as confident, capable young people.
Year 4: Henley Fort, Guildford
In Year 4, children enjoy their first residential experience with a one-night stay at Henley Fort in Guildford. This Victorian fort was originally built to protect London from invasion and was later used by the Home Guard as a supply depot during the Second World War. Today, the site offers an immersive historical experience where children step back in time and experience life during wartime. Dressed in authentic-style overalls, they take part in activities such as blackout exercises, air raid scenarios and Home Guard duties. To make the experience even more memorable, children spend the night in traditional Mongolian yurts.
Year 5: Calshot Activities Centre, Southampton
Each year, our Year 5 pupils visit Calshot Activities Centre near Southampton for a two-night residential. Staying in dormitory accommodation, the children take part in an exciting programme of adventurous activities, including dry-slope skiing, indoor climbing, kayaking and sailing. This visit provides valuable opportunities for children to strengthen friendships, build resilience, develop independence and challenge themselves in new ways. Above all, it encourages them to live out our school values of Hope, Trust, Courage and Resilience.
Year 6: Hindleap Warren, Ashdown Forest
Our Year 6 pupils travel to Hindleap Warren Outdoor Education Centre in Ashdown Forest, East Sussex, for a three-night residential adventure. The centre offers a varied programme of outdoor activities, including orienteering, high ropes, initiative challenges and bushcraft. These experiences encourage teamwork, problem-solving and personal growth, while inspiring children to step beyond their comfort zones. Staying in dormitory accommodation, pupils also take on responsibilities within the dining hall, helping them to develop greater independence as they prepare for the transition to secondary school.
