Year 5 - Beech Class
Welcome to Year 5
Year 5 marks the beginning of Upper Key Stage 2 and is an exciting year of increasing independence, responsibility and challenge. Children build on the secure foundations developed lower down the school while preparing for the final stage of their primary education. As the curriculum becomes more demanding, children are encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning, develop resilience and confidence, and become reflective, independent learners.
In English, children explore a wide range of high-quality texts, developing their reading fluency, comprehension and analytical skills. They learn to infer meaning, discuss themes and authors' choices, and support their ideas with evidence from the text. In writing, children are encouraged to write with greater sophistication, using an increasingly rich vocabulary alongside a secure understanding of grammar, spelling and punctuation to write effectively for a variety of audiences and purposes.
In mathematics, children deepen their understanding of place value, the four operations, fractions, decimals and percentages, while applying their knowledge to increasingly complex reasoning and problem-solving tasks. There is a strong emphasis on mathematical fluency, accuracy and the ability to explain and justify their thinking.
Beyond English and maths, children enjoy a broad and engaging curriculum across science, history, geography, art, design technology, computing, music, PSHE, PE and French. Through enquiry-based learning and practical experiences, they develop critical thinking, creativity and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Year 5 is an important and rewarding year, full of discovery, challenge and achievement, as children continue to grow academically, socially and emotionally while preparing for the exciting opportunities that Year 6 will bring.
