Science is taught through the Kapow Primary Science Scheme of Work, which provides a coherent and progressive curriculum from Reception to Year 6. Key features of our implementation include:

Carefully Sequenced Learning

Scientific knowledge and skills are mapped progressively across the school. The curriculum follows a spiral approach, revisiting key concepts and building upon previous learning so that children develop greater depth of understanding over time.

Working Scientifically

Scientific enquiry is woven throughout every unit rather than taught in isolation. Children regularly develop skills such as:

• Observing over time
• Pattern seeking
• Identifying, classifying and grouping
• Comparative and fair testing
• Research using secondary sources

These enquiry skills are applied in meaningful contexts to deepen conceptual understanding.

Vocabulary and Communication

The explicit teaching of scientific vocabulary is a key feature of our curriculum. Children are encouraged to discuss, explain, justify and present their ideas using accurate scientific language. This supports both scientific understanding and wider language development.

Practical and Engaging Experiences

Learning is enriched through investigations, outdoor learning opportunities, demonstrations, collaborative tasks and the use of high-quality resources. Children are encouraged to ask questions, test ideas and learn from evidence.

Strong Foundations for Future Learning

From the Early Years onwards, children develop essential communication, observation, recording and reasoning skills. Scientific learning also reinforces reading, writing and mathematical skills, enabling pupils to interpret information, record findings accurately and use data effectively.

Inclusive for All Learners

Learning is adapted to ensure every child can access the curriculum and achieve success. Appropriate scaffolds, support and challenge are provided so that all pupils, including those with SEND, can participate fully and make excellent progress.

Assessment for Learning

Teachers use ongoing assessment throughout lessons and units to identify misconceptions, address gaps in understanding and adapt teaching accordingly. Retrieval practice, questioning and regular opportunities to apply prior knowledge help ensure learning is secure and retained. Within each unit studied, pupils' learning is assessed against the learning objectives and any relevant scientific enquiry skills to provide a summative assessment. Opportunities for children to communicate using scientific vocabulary also form part of the assessment process in each unit.
