Achieving excellence for all children

within an inspiring and inclusive environment

Year 4 - Chestnut Class

Welcome to Year 4

Year 4 is an exciting and rewarding year as children continue their Key Stage 2 learning journey, building on the knowledge and skills developed in previous years while becoming increasingly confident, independent and resilient learners. Children are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their learning, developing the organisation and perseverance needed to tackle new challenges across the curriculum.

In English, children further develop their reading fluency and comprehension skills through a wide range of rich and engaging texts. They learn to explore vocabulary in greater depth, make inferences, explain their ideas using evidence from the text and develop a deeper understanding of an author's purpose. In writing, children build their grammar, punctuation and spelling knowledge, writing with increasing accuracy, creativity and confidence for a range of audiences and purposes.

In mathematics, children strengthen their understanding of number, place value and the four operations, while applying their learning through reasoning and problem-solving activities. A key focus throughout the year is securing rapid recall of all multiplication and division facts up to 12 × 12. To celebrate this achievement, all children take part in the Multiplication Tables Check in June, which helps ensure they have the strong mathematical foundations needed for upper Key Stage 2.

Children continue to enjoy a broad and engaging curriculum across science, history, geography, art, design technology, computing, music, PE, PSHE and French. Through enquiry, investigation and practical learning experiences, children are encouraged to think critically, ask questions and make meaningful connections across subjects. In the spring term, children also take part in swimming lessons, developing essential swimming techniques and water safety skills as part of the National Curriculum for PE.

Year 4 is a busy and exciting year full of challenge, achievement and memorable experiences, helping children grow in confidence while preparing them for the next stage of their Key Stage 2 journey.
