At Medstead CE Primary School, we believe that Religious Education helps children flourish academically, spiritually, socially and morally. Through their RE learning, pupils are encouraged to be curious about the beliefs, values and experiences of others whilst reflecting on their own worldview.

Our RE curriculum is designed to enable pupils to:

• Develop a rich understanding of Christianity as a diverse, living global faith.
• Gain knowledge and understanding of a range of religious and non-religious worldviews.
• Explore important questions about meaning, purpose, identity, morality and belonging.
• Engage respectfully and thoughtfully with people whose beliefs and experiences differ from their own.
• Develop religious literacy through theological, philosophical and human/social science approaches.

• Reflect on their own ideas, values and beliefs in a safe and supportive environment.
• Recognise the influence of religion and belief on individuals, communities and society.

At Medstead, children engage with aspects of what it means to live life in the Christian traditions, along with depth studies of other religious traditions as follows:

• Early Years and Key Stage 1 – Sikhi
• Years 3 and 4 – Judaism and Hindu Traditions
• Years 5 and 6 – Islam and Buddhism

Where children in our classes come from a range of faith, cultural or family traditions, we make use of opportunities to recognise and explore these experiences within our learning. This helps children to share aspects of their own identity while developing understanding and respect for the beliefs and traditions of others.

Throughout the year, we also explore a wide range of religious and cultural festivals and celebrations from around the world. By learning about the diversity of people, communities and beliefs that make up modern Britain and the wider global community, we encourage our children to develop curiosity, empathy and a strong sense of themselves as responsible global citizens.

As a Church of England school, we aim to ensure every child leaves Medstead with a secure understanding of Christianity whilst developing respect, generosity and appreciation for the diversity of beliefs found within modern Britain and the wider world.
