Impact - The difference it makes to our pupils

The impact of our history curriculum is reflected in what pupils know, understand and are able to do. We continually monitor pupils' progress through a range of formative and summative assessment opportunities to ensure that learning is secure, meaningful and lasting.

Within lessons, teachers use a variety of ongoing assessment strategies, including targeted questioning, retrieval practice and interactive learning activities. These approaches provide immediate insights into pupils’ understanding and enable teachers to adapt their teaching to meet pupils’ needs effectively.

Each unit includes a Skills Catcher and a Knowledge Assessment Quiz, which are used as summative assessment tools at the end of the unit. These enable teachers to measure pupils’ understanding at key points in their learning journey and assess how successfully they have retained and applied key historical knowledge and skills over time. Written outcomes and pupil voice further demonstrate pupils’ engagement, understanding and ability to recall and use their learning confidently.

By the time pupils leave our school, they will have developed a secure understanding of Britain's past and the wider world, together with the historical skills needed for the next stage of their education. We aim for our pupils to become curious and enquiring learners who ask thoughtful questions, know how to seek and evaluate evidence, and can make informed, balanced judgements about the past. Through their study of history, pupils will gain a deeper understanding of how the past has shaped the world they live in today and develop the confidence to become informed and active citizens.
