Year 6 - Elm Class
Welcome to Year 6
Year 6 is an exciting and important year as children embark on their final stage of primary education. It is a year of challenge, achievement and growing independence, as pupils consolidate their learning from across Key Stage 2 and prepare for a successful transition to secondary school. Children are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their learning, develop strong organisational skills and become confident, resilient learners.
In English, children continue to refine their reading comprehension skills through a wide range of high-quality texts, analysing language, themes and authors' choices in greater depth. In writing, they learn to write with maturity and purpose, selecting appropriate vocabulary, grammar and punctuation to suit different audiences and genres. There is also a strong emphasis on developing confident speaking and listening skills, helping children articulate their ideas effectively.
In mathematics, children build fluency and confidence across all areas of the curriculum, including number, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, algebra and geometry. They are encouraged to apply their knowledge through increasingly challenging reasoning and problem-solving activities, explaining and justifying their mathematical thinking with growing confidence.
Throughout the year, children complete the final elements of the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum and prepare for the Key Stage 2 SATs in May. We work closely with every child to ensure they feel supported, confident and well prepared, while maintaining a balanced curriculum that continues to foster curiosity and enjoyment of learning.
Alongside English and maths, children enjoy a rich and engaging curriculum across science, history, geography, art, design technology, computing, music, PSHE, PE and French, providing opportunities to deepen their knowledge, develop new skills and explore personal interests. Year 6 also offers many memorable experiences and leadership opportunities, helping children grow in confidence and maturity as role models within the school community.
Year 6 is a rewarding and memorable year, full of achievement, personal growth and celebration, as children prepare for the exciting next step in their educational journey.
