Achieving excellence for all children

within an inspiring and inclusive environment

Year 3 - Maple Class

Welcome to Year 3

Year 3 is an exciting and important year as children begin their journey in Key Stage 2, building on the skills developed in Key Stage 1 and becoming increasingly independent, responsible learners. As expectations grow, children are encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning while developing confidence, resilience and a positive attitude towards new challenges.

In English, children continue to develop their reading fluency and comprehension skills through a range of high-quality texts. There is a strong focus on understanding increasingly challenging vocabulary, retrieving information, making inferences and discussing authors' choices. In writing, children build their knowledge of grammar, punctuation and spelling, learning to write with greater accuracy, creativity and detail across a range of genres and purposes.

In mathematics, children deepen their understanding of number and place value while developing efficient mental and written calculation methods. A key focus throughout the year is learning and securing the 3, 4 and 8 times tables, alongside applying multiplication and division skills to solve problems. Children are also introduced to more complex concepts in fractions, measurement, geometry and statistics, while developing their reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Beyond English and maths, children enjoy an engaging and varied curriculum across subjects such as science, history, geography, art, design technology, computing, music, PSHE and PE. In Year 3, the children also begin learning French, developing their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in a modern foreign language and gaining an appreciation of different cultures.

Through enquiry, investigation and hands-on learning experiences, children develop curiosity, creativity and a deeper understanding of the world around them. Year 3 is a fantastic year full of discovery, challenge and achievement, providing children with the strong foundations they need to flourish throughout Key Stage 2.
