Year 2 - Willow Class
Welcome to Year 2
This is an exciting and important year as the children continue their journey through Key Stage 1, building confidence, independence and resilience in preparation for Key Stage 2.
In English, Year 2 focuses on developing fluent, confident readers and writers. Children continue to build their phonics knowledge while strengthening their comprehension skills through a wide range of exciting texts. In writing, they learn to compose sentences with increasing accuracy, creativity and detail, applying spelling, grammar and punctuation skills across a variety of purposes. Through reading, writing, speaking and listening activities, children broaden their vocabulary and develop the communication skills needed for future success across the curriculum.
In mathematics, Year 2 focuses on developing children's confidence and fluency with number and calculation. Following the National Curriculum, children build secure foundations in place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, including learning and applying their 2, 5 and 10 times tables. They develop their reasoning skills by explaining their mathematical thinking and applying their knowledge to solve a range of practical and real-life problems. Alongside this, children explore measurement, geometry and fractions, helping them to become confident, curious and resilient mathematicians.
Across the wider curriculum, children explore the world around them through engaging learning in science, history, geography, art, design and technology, computing, music, PE, PSHE and RE. They develop enquiry skills, creativity, and curiosity while making meaningful links between subjects. Year 2 is a wonderful year of discovery, challenge, and achievement, providing a strong foundation for future learning while ensuring every child enjoys a rich, varied, and exciting curriculum.
