Achieving excellence for all children

within an inspiring and inclusive environment

Year 1 - Larch Class

Welcome to Year 1

Year 1 is an exciting and important year, as children begin the transition from the Early Years Foundation Stage to the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum. Whilst learning becomes more structured, we continue to provide opportunities for exploration, play and child-initiated learning through carefully planned continuous provision. This ensures children remain engaged, curious and enthusiastic learners as they develop greater independence and confidence.

In English, we introduce more formal reading and writing lessons, helping children develop the skills needed to become confident communicators. Phonics remains a key focus, and we follow the highly successful Read Write Inc. programme to teach early reading and spelling. Through daily phonics sessions, children build on their existing knowledge, develop fluency and accuracy, and become increasingly confident readers. Regular assessments ensure that teaching is matched to each child's needs, while carefully selected reading books support success and enjoyment at every stage. For more information about the scheme and ways to support your child at home, please visit our Phonics and Early Reading page.

In mathematics, children develop a secure understanding of number through a strong focus on number fluency, place value and mental calculation strategies. They learn to solve problems, explain their reasoning and apply their mathematical knowledge in a range of practical contexts, building firm foundations for future learning.

Our broad and engaging curriculum also provides opportunities to explore science, history, geography, art, computing and other foundation subjects through hands-on experiences and meaningful learning challenges. In addition, our spacious outdoor environment continues to play a valuable role in supporting both academic achievement and personal development, offering rich opportunities for investigation, creativity and physical activity.

Year 1 is a wonderful year of growth, discovery and achievement, and we look forward to supporting every child as they develop the skills, confidence and enthusiasm needed for the next stage of their learning journey.
