Reading is an important skill and one that can many children can find difficult. We want children to have a love of reading and enjoying books is the start of this. Daily reading is key to developing reading skills but this can be done in different ways.
There are two main skills involved in reading:
I will be posting some activities here to support with developing these skills if your child is a reluctant reader.
Wherever possible ensure that your child is interested in the topic of the book they are reading as this will help motivation. This can be more difficult for beginning readers as the books need to be phonetically decodable in order for them to develop their independent reading skills. However there needs to be a balance of your child practising their reading skills and also being read to in order to develop a love of books and reading.
Oxford Owl has some great resources for books which are decodable to give your child access to a range of reading materials whilst at home. https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page
