National Championship Success!
Saturday 17th June was a very special day for 4 young girls at Medstead Primary School. It was the day of the 23rd ESSA National Primary Schools’ Team Championships in Sheffield at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre.
Sophie Pilkington, Lottie Jackson, Anna Thompson and Alice Guest, who were competing in the 4x25m freestyle race, had to qualify for the competition by successfully navigating through 2 qualifying rounds. The first round was the Hampshire Schools’ Primary Team Championships, which the girls won, and then the South East Schools’ Primary Team Championships where the girls finished 3rd.
Going into Saturday’s final, the girls were ranked 8th in the country, in the small schools category, with a time of 1:06.48 seconds. All girls are members of the Alton Swim Club but needed extra training because our school does not have a swimming pool. Some of the coaches at the club provided these sessions and this additional practice would later turn out to pay off.
On the day, the girls had to make it through qualifying to stand a chance of making it onto the podium in the final. There were 24 schools in total and only the fastest 8 would advance. The girls finished qualifying with a time of 1:00.56. In itself, an unbelievable achievement because they took nearly 6 seconds off of their previous time. In the final, the girls did the unthinkable and took a historic bronze medal in a time of 1:01.09. Medstead Primary School was also the only state school competing this year.
