Calculation progression

At Medstead Primary, we believe that it is essential that all children have access to concrete resources, become familiar with pictorial representations and use abstract written methods, to develop a secure foundation and progression through calculation using the four operations. This document has been designed to illustrate the approach that will be taken throughout our children’s Maths learning

At every level of their learning, it is essential that children have planned opportunities to use their understanding of calculation within an applied context so that the children will develop depth, fluency and conceptual understanding.  We will encourage children to use pictorial representations to clarify how to solve the problem.

At Medstead we recognise that all children are individuals and that it is our role to enable them to access their learning, so there will always be a variety of approaches available to support all children at our school.
