Healthy Eating
This term the school has been concentrating on healthy eating and our peer mentors organised a 5 a day challenge week to raise the importance of having 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day as part of a healthy diet. They introduced the challenge to the school during an assembly on healthy eating. everyone was given a 'fruit and vegetable' diary and invited to write down the fruit and vegetables they ate everyday for a week. The response was very good with many children taking part in the challenge and earning merit marks for their house as well as certificates for reaching the target of 35 portions eaten during the week.Children were also able to take part in competitions during the week. Key Stage 2 took part in a national competition involved in raising money for Cancer Research. The competition, known as 'Pound a Poem', involved writing a poem about fruit or vegetables. Children were asked to donate £1 when they entered their poem. The winning enteries will go forward to be judged nationally in December. Key Stage 1 were able to enter a fruit and vegetable themed picture competition. The entrance fee was 50p which was also donated to Cancer Research. Both competitions raised £40 for Cancer Research.
Milk in school
This term has alos seen the introduction of the school milk scheme. All pupils under 5 years old have been offered free school milk daily. Those pupils over 5 years old are also able to take part in the scheme for a minimal cost. The milk supplied is semi-skimmed and comes in 1/3 pint cartons. For those pupils not eligible for fee milk it costs just 11p a day.
Water is cool!
Medstead School believes that it is important for its pupils to have free access to drinking water throughout the school day. This term we have been able to install two cool water dispensers within the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 corridors. Children have also been provided with water bottles which can be easily filled and refilled from these water dispensers.
